The Doctoral Program in Counselor Education and Supervision has been developed to challenge students with rigorous coursework and meaningful experiential activities. Students in the program will be exposed to basic concepts and techniques in clinical intervention and treatment, research, and clinical supervision. We anticipate that graduates of our program will have the potential to assume leadership positions in the counseling field and be equipped to model the highest ideals and ethics of our profession.
The program is designed for those who have completed a 60 hours master’s degree in counseling, hold licensure or certification as a professional counselor, and demonstrate the potential for assuming major leadership roles in the counseling profession at the regional or national level in university, clinical or research settings.
The mission of NYUS’s doctoral program in Counselor Education and Supervision is to educate and prepare knowledgeable counselor educators from diverse backgrounds to advance the profession through teaching, scholarship, research, and service. The program aims to engage students in developing an identity as counselor educators; showing evidence of professional leadership potential; generating new knowledge for the profession through research that results in scholarly publications; and, demonstrating evidence of multicultural and technical competency in teaching, research, supervision, and clinical practice.
Program objectives are centered on a primary goal, which is the education of outstanding counselor educators prepared to assume leadership roles in multicultural settings that provide supervision, instruction, and research.
The program objectives of the doctoral program include the following:
Students will be able to explain and employ the principles, concepts, skills and applications of advanced counseling, counselor education, and counselor supervision. This will be accomplished through faculty mentoring, coursework, practica, internship, and independent and dissertation research in the following areas:
Theories pertaining to the principles and practices of counseling and counselor supervision
Instructional theory and methods relevant to counselor education
Multicultural issues and competencies, including social change theory and advocacy action planning
Design, implementation, and analysis of quantitative research
Models and methods of assessment and use of data
Ethical and legal considerations in counselor education and supervision
Students will be able to assume leadership roles in the field of counseling as college and university faculty, advanced practitioners, consultants, researchers and scholarly authors, and administrators.
Students will demonstrate a sense of multicultural awareness that will result in culturally appropriate practices in all areas of counseling, education and supervision and application of this awareness in diverse world-wide contexts.
As a program aspiring to be accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), the doctoral program accepts as a primary obligation extending the knowledge base of the counseling profession in a climate of scholarly inquiry, and it prepares students to generate new knowledge for the counseling profession through research and dissertations that are appropriate to the field of counselor education or supervision.
Note: This program complies with national standards that require new faculty members of Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP)-accredited programs to hold doctoral degrees in counselor education and supervision by 2013. The Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision is not accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). However, the program was developed to be in line with these national standards. Since the Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision is a new program, the university is not yet able to apply for CACREP accreditation. We are pursuing accreditation and students will be notified at such time if the program becomes accredited in the future.
